Switzerland rocks!

There has been many a good year since anyone last used words like "The best song is the one from Switzerland" and meant them. That country of alps and cheese have had a soft spot for entries ranging from unspectacular to disastrous. (Of course, the exception to the rule was Vanilla Ninja in 2005, they were good.)

But this year, the Swiss got it right. Very right.

"Era stupendo" is a timeless piece of pop drama in a great arrangement, the kind of song that can change its tempo without disturbing you. And it does.

And Paolo Meneguzzi is adorable. How could he take part in Sanremo so many times without becoming a real star in Italy? Well, the Italians sort of fell off the wagon a few years back, didn't they? But Paolo Boy looks right, has a magnificent voice and delivers the song with all the attack it requires.

Switzerland will surely be in the final this year. And quite high up there, also, I predict.

Äsch. 11th in their semi. At best. Not that I don't like it, but come on... it's Switzerland.

Why wouldn't it work? A good song will always work. I promise you. Unless he makes a fool of himself, missing the cameras and such...

Hi Nina and Tobias, uhm I mean Posh and Becks, congratulations on your new co-produced Euro-blog!
Well, this year Italy will see not just Paolo Meneguzzi singing for Switzerland (by the way, is he going to bring all those dancers along to Belgrade?) but also the tiny (did I say tiny? I meant micro) country of San Marino participating for the first time in the contest. Which is quite ironic not just because San Marino is entirely surrounded by Italian territory but also because 50% of San Marino TV is owned by mamma RAI.
So maybe next year we'll have the other 50% finally realize that it's time for Italy too to go back.
Unless in the meanwhile more countries will decide that the Contest has become too much of an "eastern Europe thing"...
Bisous to both of you...
A

If RAI thinks there are too many eastern countries taking part, then the only sensible thing is to take part themselves and level it out, right? :)
Good thing that you are coming in here to throw an eye every once in a while. I think I managed to get you quite smitten by Eurovision back then in 1998, right? :)
But did I get it wrong here? Is Paolo more of a star than I thought? His website suggests that he is...
I am very much looking forward to San Marino! I hope they win! :D

Well, I must say that you were the one who introduced me to the Euroviosion. I believe that besides the 1991 edition, RAI never even broadcast the Contest live (always pre-recorded and summarized) and not many Italians (including myself) knew what it was.
Anyway, San Marino TV can be seen in part (a small part) of the Italian territory (unfortunately they do not have a satellite channel) and if some well known Italian singer will represent San Marino, Italians might become interested in the show again...

By the way, Paolo Meneguzzi's song is identical to Amy Diamond's "It can only get better".
Just a coincidence I'd assume.
